BLUE MOON GUEST APARTMENT

Cornwall Standard Freeholder July 23, 1994
Tea room splash of Victoriana

by Wilma Scott

For a quiet talk, peaceful thoughts, even a daydream or two on a lazy summer afternoon, step into the past at The Village Antiques & Tea Room on Highway 31 in Williamsburg.
The Tea Room is set in a rambling blue clapboard house with charming window boxed filled with brightly colored begonias.
Guests come in to sip tea and browse among a panoply of teas, china, gifts, collections of glass and salt and pepper shakers, antiques, stained glass, pot pourrit, Victorian cards - the list is endless.
Owners Marcel Allard and Victor Dupuis first opened as an antique store in 1989, but their dream was to add a tea room using many of their antiques as furnishings.
Three years of renovating and adding an addition connecting it to the former carriage house have turned the house into a quaint shop and tea room with a decidedly Victorian atmosphere.
"We think the house was built sometime before 1860," says Dupuis.  "We found an old newspaper from that year in one of the walls when we were renovating."
The downstairs served as a harness shop around the turn of the century.  Among other things, in its lifetime the building has served as a post office, a novelty shop and home for the Masonic Lodge.
Tea is served from 2:30 to 4:30 from Wednesday to Sunday.  The menu includes a tea to suit every taste.  The difficulty is deciding which to choose.
Tea is served in china pots on tables set with antique china dishes on crisp white linens.
Victorian Tea consists of a scone, slice of tea bread, butter tart and cookie with choice of tea.  High Tea consists of tea served with finger sandwiches and desserts.
The Tea Room also serves lunch.  The menu includes homemade soups, appetizers such as escargots, Coquille St Jacques, and Shrimp Aurora, mouthwatering, freshly made salads, sandwiches, and gourmet entrees such as Crepes, Salmon Pie and Steak & Kidney Pie.
The Tea Room's specialty Carrot Cake is ambrosia in itself.  This is definitely not a "fast food" place as all entree selections are cooked as ordered, but definitely worth the wait.  All desserts are baked on the premises.  The reasonable prices are another pleasant surprise.
